Affordable Housing in Middleton: A Focus for Our Future
In the Spring of 2022 Middleton created the Affordable Housing Trust Committee to help devise strategies to increase the availability of affordable housing options in our town. This year the Trust has identified seven key areas of impact that the committee is now focused on developing plans to shape and improve our town’s approach to housing. These objectives are essential for ensuring that all residents, including our senior citizens, have access to safe, affordable, and appropriate housing.
1. Increasing Deed-Restricted Affordable Housing
The Trust is committed to enhancing the supply of deed-restricted affordable housing to meet local needs and state housing goals. This increase will not only support families but also ensure that seniors can find suitable options as they age in place.
2. Diversifying Housing Stock
A diverse housing stock is crucial for a thriving community. The Trust aims to create a variety of housing options, including starter homes for first-time buyers, appropriately sized homes for families, and rental units. This diversity ensures that residents can find the right home for their circumstances without facing displacement.
3. Supporting Seniors in Aging in Place
A critical focus of the Trust is to ensure that seniors can remain in their homes as they age. By promoting accessible housing options and necessary modifications, we can help our older residents live independently and comfortably within their community. This will include low and no-cost options to assist with modifications to help keep people in their homes.
4. Ensuring Safe, Quality Homes
The Trust is dedicated to maintaining housing standards in Middleton. This includes ensuring that homes are in good condition and free from building code violations. Quality housing is a fundamental aspect of community well-being, and all residents deserve a safe living environment.
5. Providing Accessible Housing Options
For those in need of accessible homes, the Trust is focused on expanding availability. Everyone deserves the opportunity to live in a home that meets their physical requirements, fostering inclusivity and dignity for all residents.
6. Informed Decision-Making
To make effective changes, the Trust Committee is committed to informed decision-making. This means leveraging data and community feedback to guide their actions, ensuring that the initiatives align with the true needs of Middleton’s residents.
7. Enhancing Community Awareness
Lastly, the Trust aims to improve access to housing information for all community members. Residents should be aware of available opportunities and resources, which will empower them to make informed housing decisions.
By viewing all actions through the lens of desired impact, the Middleton Affordable Housing Trust Committee will create meaningful, lasting changes. As the Trust begins work on these initiatives, we welcome your input and assistance as we begin implementing our Five-Year Strategic Plan (now available on www.middletonma.gov and at the Flint Public Library).
As we move forward, it’s vital for our Council on Aging and residents of all ages to stay engaged in these initiatives. Together, we can make Middleton a place where everyone has access to the housing they need. Let’s continue to advocate for an inclusive and supportive community for all!
